'Butterfly' - Season 1 Episode Release Dates, Cast, Trailer
Season 1 starts Wednesday 13th August 2025 // Network: Prime Video
Butterfly Official Synopsis
"David Jung is an enigmatic, highly unpredictable former US intelligence operative living in South Korea, whose life is blown to pieces when the consequences of an impossible decision from his past come back to haunt him, and he finds himself pursued by Rebecca, a deadly, sociopathic young agent assigned to kill him."
Why You Should Watch 'Butterfly'
Prime Video's Butterfly isn't just another glossy spy show. Based on the acclaimed graphic novel, the six-episode series packs a serious punch thanks to Daniel Dae Kim's stellar performance as ex-spy David Jung. Kim nails the tricky balance between ice-cold professional and vulnerable guy wrestling with his demons. The central twist? The assassin hunting him down is his own daughter.
What makes Butterfly special is that it treats espionage like more than just fancy car chases and explosions. The action sequences will have you gripping your couch. But it's the quieter stuff that really gets you. The loaded silences. The conversations that say everything without saying anything. Talk about awkward family dinners. Kim and Reina Hardesty sell the father-daughter tension so well it almost hurts to watch.
Butterfly delivers something more than the usual throwaway TV. The pacing never drags. The performances hit hard. The Korean-American elements feel authentic rather than shoe-horned in for diversity. With only six episodes, there's no filler. In a world drowning in content, Butterfly stands out by mixing genuine suspense with actual heart. Fair warning though: if you're planning to watch "just one episode" before bed, you might want to clear your schedule. This one's got serious binge potential.
Who Is In 'Butterfly'?
Daniel Dae Kim leads the series as David Jung, a former U.S. intelligence operative whose quiet exile in South Korea is upended when his past, namely his daughter Rebecca, resurface. Kim is a seasoned actor best known for playing Jin-Soo Kwon on Lost and Detective Chin Ho Kelly in Hawaii Five-0. Much like Butterfly, he also co-produced and appeared on The Good Doctor.
Rebecca is played by Reina Hardesty. She is a deadly young agent sent to kill David Jung, only to discover he is her father. Hardesty's profile includes roles in the Netflix teen drama Greenhouse Academy as Aspen Fairchild, the tech-startup series StartUp as Stella Namura, and appearances in The Flash and DC's Legends of Tomorrow as the villainous "Weather Witch" Joss Mardon.
Piper Perabo portrays Juno, the formidable antagonist at the heart of the shadowy spy organization pursuing Jung. She led the USA Network spy drama Covert Affairs as Annie Walker for five seasons, though her more recent credits include Notorious, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels and the award winning Yellowstone.

Fun Fact
Daniel Dae Kim and Piper Perabo share a friendship forged long before Butterfly ever existed as a TV show idea. With Kim exec producing the show, he obviously had some control over casting decisions. Kim and Perabo worked together in The Cave (2005) and have been firm friends ever since. He invited her onboard the production with a simple question - "You wanna go to Korea?". I guess she answered "Yes!".
Perabo is became step-mum to Lilli Kay over a decade ago, who can now be seen starring alongside Owen Wilson in the gentle (and awesome) summer comedy show "Stick" on Apple TV+.
