The Perfect Couple Official Synopsis

Season 1 starts Thursday 5th September 2024 // Network: Netflix

"It's Nantucket wedding season - also known as summer - the sight of a bride racing down Main Street is as common as the sun setting at Madaket Beach. The Sacks-Winbury wedding promises to be an event to remember: the groom's wealthy parents have spared no expense to host a lavish ceremony at their oceanfront estate. But it's going to be memorable for all the wrong reasons after tragedy strikes: a body is discovered in Nantucket Harbor just hours before the ceremony - and everyone in the wedding party is suddenly a suspect. As Dan Carter, Chief of Police, interviews the bride, the groom, the groom's famous mystery-novelist mother, and even a member of his own family, he discovers that every wedding is a minefield - and no couple is perfect."

Why You Should Watch 'The Perfect Couple'

In the grand tradition of mystery thrillers, where idyllic settings give way to dark secrets, Netflix's The Perfect Couple promises to lure us into a world where nothing is quite as it seems. Adapted from Elin Hilderbrand's bestselling novel, this series isn't merely about the intrigue of a wedding that goes awry, but about the fragile veneers that people construct to mask their imperfections. It is less about the "perfect couple" and more about the imperfections that lie beneath the surface.

A Plot Unveiled

At first glance, The Perfect Couple offers all the trappings of a sun-drenched New England romance - a wedding by the sea, a family estate, and the promise of a perfect life. But as with any good story, it's not long before the cracks begin to show. The series centers on a wedding that was supposed to be a dream come true, but instead turns into a nightmare when a body is found just before the ceremony. It's a plot straight out of Agatha Christie's playbook, but with the modern sensibilities that make it uniquely its own.

The bride-to-be, Amelia Sacks, finds herself in the eye of this storm. What was meant to be the happiest day of her life quickly unravels into a web of suspicion and buried secrets. As the investigation unfolds, we're invited to peel back the layers of each character, revealing the often-messy realities that they have so carefully hidden.

A Cast of Complications

The series boasts a cast as intriguing as the plot itself. Nicole Kidman, a seasoned performer with an uncanny ability to convey both warmth and chill, takes on the role of Greer Garrison Winbury, the matriarch of the Winbury family. Kidman's presence alone suggests that this isn't just another thriller; it's a character study that delves into the complexities of familial bonds and the weight of societal expectations.

Opposite Kidman is Liev Schreiber as Tag Winbury, the father of the groom. Schreiber brings a gravitas that hints at a man who may be as burdened by his own secrets as those around him. Meanwhile, Dakota Fanning, playing the bride's maid of honor, adds a layer of youthful exuberance tinged with underlying tension.

Amelia and Benji, the seemingly perfect couple at the heart of the story, are portrayed by Eve Hewson and Billy Howle. Their chemistry will likely be the key to unlocking the mysteries that surround the fatal wedding. Hewson, in particular, has shown a talent for playing characters who are far more complicated than they initially appear, suggesting that Amelia's journey will be one of profound self-discovery, if not outright survival.

The Tension Between Appearances and Reality

What makes The Perfect Couple compelling isn't just the mystery of who-dun-what, but the exploration of why they-dun-it. This is a story about appearances - the perfect couple, the perfect wedding, the perfect life - and the tension that arises when reality doesn't measure up. It's a theme as old as storytelling itself, but one that never loses its relevance because it taps into the human condition: our desire to be seen as better, happier, more successful than we truly are.

The setting of Nantucket, with its picturesque landscapes and affluent society, serves as the perfect backdrop for this tale of deception. It's a place where beauty and privilege are on full display, but where the truth remains hidden behind closed doors. The series will undoubtedly play with this contrast, using the island's serene exterior to underscore the chaos that lies just beneath.

A Promising Journey

One thing is clear: this is a story that promises to be as much about the characters as it is about the mystery. It's a tale of love and betrayal, of secrets kept and secrets revealed, all wrapped in the seductive allure of a high-society wedding.

If the series can capture even a fraction of the nuance and depth of Hilderbrand's novel, it will not just be another thriller on the streaming docket, but a sophisticated exploration of the human psyche and the often painful truths that lie behind the masks we wear.

In the end, The Perfect Couple might just show us that perfection is an illusion, and that the most compelling stories are those that dare to reveal the flaws within.

Who Is In 'The Perfect Couple'?

Nicole Kidman stars as the matriarch of the Winbury family and mother-of-the-groom, Greer Garrison Winbury, a wealthy mystery novelist. Surely her stories are just fiction and not a special set of skills she harbours, right? Kidman, known for being a movie star, has been shockingly present on the small screen for the last few years, with Big Little Lies, The Undoing, Nine Perfect Strangers, Lioness, and just this year, Expats. Kidman also serves as Executive Producer on the show.

Liev Schreiber portrays Tag Winbury, father-of-the-groom. Despite his own families wealth, he's fine with being the not-famous one of the power couple, I'm sure, and never ever acts suspicious. Schreiber is a nine-time Emmy nominee and six-time Golden Globe nominee, so has the range to keep the audience guessing until the last moment. A wide range of bit parts on TV, he's more widely known as the stoic foil in movies. He is best known for starring in Showtime's crime-fixer drama Ray Donovan, which ran for seven seasons and got a feature-length spinoff.

Eve Hewson stars as bride-to-be Amelia Sacks, marrying into the Winbury family, much to the disapproval of her future mother-in-law. Is it true love, or does she have an ulterior motive? Hewson has been in a few hits recently including The Luminaries, Behind Her Eyes and Bad Sisters (which starts season 2 in November).

Dakota Fanning (the older of the Fanning sisters) plays Abby Winbury, the pregnant wife of the groom-to-be's brother, and maid-of-honour to Amelia. As yet another outsider, whos side is she on when the questionning starts? Dakota has a long film vocation history, but also has a susbstantial presence on the small screen. She starred in The Alienist, The First Lady and most recently in the neo-noir thriller Ripley.

Fun Fact

While the series is based on the book of the same name, some curious minor (that we so far know of) changes have occurred. The bride-to-be has had a name change from Celeste Otis to Amelia Sacks, and the Chief of Police Ed Kapenash is now Dan Carter. Hewsons characters name change actually came about from a character played by the top of the ticket. Kidmans character in her popular and still in prodution show Big Little Lies is named Celeste, and producers didn't want the audience confused about which character is which. Like we're that dumb... They were on a cruise at the end of LOST, right?
