Streaming gets Stronger with New and Returning Shows in September 2024
Still reeling from the writers strike, Network TV is a bit of a wash out this year. It's not all bad news though, as streaming does bring some interesting viewing options, starting with The Perfect Couple. Nicole Kidman leads a stellar cast in this dramedy who-dunnit, when a body washes up on the beach where the son of a rich family is marrying his out of town girlfriend. Everyone has motive and everyone is a suspect in this miniseries based on the best-selling novel of the same name. Kidman, known for being a movie star, has been shockingly present on the small screen for the last few years, with Big Little Lies, The Undoing, Nine Perfect Strangers, Lioness, and just this year, Expats.
The latest Batman movie, that was at least better than the previous still-canon(?) Batman movie, gave us an off-shoot, in The Penguin. Colin Farrell dons a fat suit to portray Cobblepot on his rise in the criminal underworld of Gotham. Or Gotham, as most would say. We've yet to see how or why setting a Batman adversary in a Batman-less series plays out, but it should be interesting with the talent involved. Maybe just watch the recent Caped Crusader if you need your manBat fix.
FINALLY Agatha All Along hits Disney+, more than 3 years after Wandavision (the first real MCU show) introduced the character. First named House of Harkness in 2021, it was renamed to Coven of Chaos in 2022, and 2023 saw another rebrand to Darkhold Diaries. But as we now know, it was (just) Agatha All Along, a HILARIOUS call back to the Emmy Award winning 60 second song in the parent series. Sigh… Still, Kathryn Hahn is great, and this should hopefully be an interesting series, but like Penguin, how many people are interested in the Avenger adversary, without the Avenger? Marvel vs DC B-Team on streaming this month… fight!
Fight you say? Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist brings Don Cheadle, Kevin Hart, and Samuel L Jackson and a whole string of A-listers to the true-ish story of a heist gone wrong on the eve of Muhammad Ali's legendary 1970 comeback fight. Unlike your usually heist capers (a la Oceans Eleven) our anti-heroes are the victims of both the heist and the fallout. Mob bosses and petty criminals find themselves hunting the same people as the police, but everyone has their own agenda for doing so.
On Apple TV+ critically acclaimed Slow Horses returns for its fourth season. Ramping the stakes up, Jackson Lamb and his team are tasked with stopping a catastrophic event in London. Like its own name, Slow Horses took a while to gain recognition, but Season 3 went and grabbed NINE Emmy nominations, and a bunch of new viewers. On AMC, one of the last surviving Walking Dead shows returns, with Daryl Dixon trying to get home from his European holiday. He had a pretty rough first season, met some people he didn't like, found a new type of zombie, got stuck on a boat. Season 2 should find him back in his usual happy place when he is rejoined by Carol, who turned up at the last moment in Season 1. Good news for fans of the couple, the show was renewed for a third season recently, which will see Daryl & Carol extend their eurotrip into Spain. From, another show that slipped passed most in its first season, is now back for a third out. Blending mystery, horror, and psychological drama, it has garnered critical acclaim, and the hype for Season 3 is at a fever pitch. If you have so far missed this show, this is your sign to get caught up before the terror begins once again...
